KATHY’S TOUCH

(Hollingsworth, 2009) Herbaceous Hybrid. Early to Early Midseason, Semi-double to full Double, medium to a lighter pink. This is the earliest opening double flower peony we have introduced. We consider this peony to be the forerunner of a growing list of earlier opening doubled flower cultivars. In our 2008 flowering season, 'Kathy’s Touch' flowered with 'Pink Vanguard' and ahead of nearby 'Red Charm' plants by five days. The vigorous plants are sturdy, especially prolific of increase and foliage quality persisted well under open field conditions during our recent two months of summer drought. Classic two stage (flower-in-flower) form. Thin ring of pollen-bearing stamens at inner edge of the outer part and again at the center. Carpels and stigmas are generally abortive, sometimes fully formed. This is a very rare Hollingsworth introduction—a best landscaper. Donated by Hollingsworth Peonies — Maryville, Missouri

TOPEKA GARNET

(Bigger, 1975) Lactiflora Gp. This plant is endowed with an excellent combination of attributes for flowering in residential and commercial landscapes. It bears single class flowers of a bright, deep red hue, the effect heightened by color contrast of the small stamens tuft and red tipped carpals. Extra rows of guard petals impart an extra suggestion of fullness, while the several side buds lead to an extended period of flower opening. Stems are medium height with flowers borne a little above the bush. Fullness of foliage, combined with its favorable rate of increase leads to a full bush silhouette at maturity, the presentation suitable for use as a landscape specimen or as a seasonal color accent in a mixed perennials planting. Emerging new shoots are of an intense burgundy hue, the unusual effect persisting as the shoots expand, adding another season of landscape accent. The leaflets will become deep green by flowering time. APS Award of Landscape Merit 2009; APS Exhibition "Court of Honor" 2010; APS Gold Medal 2012. Donated by Linette and David Sorrentino — Chaska, Minnesota
